Adventurous Sedona Engagement Session at Merry Go Round Rock & Bell Rock
Few places in the Southwest offer the breathtaking beauty and adventure that Sedona, Arizona provides for couples. With its iconic red rock landscapes, dramatic overlooks, and endless desert scenery, it’s no surprise that Sedona has become one of the most sought-after destinations for engagement sessions and elopements.
Recently, I had the opportunity to photograph an incredible engagement session that combined everything I love about storytelling photography—adventure, connection, stunning landscapes, and a blend of both digital and film photography. To make the experience even more meaningful, I also created a cinematic short film that documented the couple’s journey through Sedona.
Sunset Engagement Photos at Merry Go Round Rock
We began the adventure with a sunset engagement session at Merry Go Round Rock, one of Sedona’s most iconic viewpoints. The rugged trail led us to panoramic views overlooking miles of red rock formations, cliffs, and desert landscapes.
As the sun began to dip below the horizon, the entire canyon glowed with warm orange and golden tones. These moments are exactly why couples travel from across the country for a Sedona engagement session. The scenery feels almost unreal, creating the perfect backdrop for authentic moments and emotional storytelling.
Using a combination of digital photography and film photography allowed me to capture the experience in two unique ways. Digital images provided crisp details and vibrant colors, while film added a timeless, nostalgic quality that perfectly complemented the desert landscape.
The result was a gallery that felt both modern and classic—a visual story that reflected not only the beauty of Sedona but also the personality of the couple.
Sunrise Engagement Session at Bell Rock
The following morning, we met before dawn for a sunrise engagement session at Bell Rock.
If you’ve ever experienced a Sedona sunrise, you know there’s something special about those quiet early hours. The trails are peaceful, the air is cool, and the first light slowly paints the red rocks with soft shades of pink, orange, and gold.
Bell Rock offered a completely different atmosphere from the previous evening. Instead of dramatic sunset light, we were greeted with gentle morning colors and a sense of calm that allowed the couple to simply enjoy being together.
These sunrise moments often create some of the most genuine photographs because there are fewer distractions and the experience feels intimate. The combination of Bell Rock’s iconic landscape and the soft morning light created images that perfectly balanced adventure and romance.
Combining Digital Photography, Film Photography, and Cinematic Storytelling
One of my favorite parts of this Sedona engagement session was being able to tell the story through multiple mediums.
Along with capturing the session digitally, I photographed portions of the experience on film. Film photography brings a unique texture and emotion that simply cannot be replicated. The subtle grain, natural colors, and organic feel create images that feel timeless and deeply personal.
In addition to photography, I created a cinematic short film that documented the couple’s adventure throughout Sedona. Movement, sound, and emotion add another layer to the story, allowing couples to relive not only how their session looked but how it felt.
